Wren Mini Cake How To

A 3" inch mini cake with wren bird design

I used 100g of duck egg blue sugarpaste for the first layer. The idea being that instead of a marzipan layer, the blue layer will be the first layer which, once the top layer has had the design cut out and you see the blue as the colour.

It is a more fiddly way to get a design on a cake, but I really wanted to see if it would work.

I levelled the cake and used a creamy buttercream filling. I let this set in the fridge while I prepared the fondant.

I used a craft knife for the second layer of fondant to carve out the image I had found of a pretty bird sillouette. I used a pin to mark the main points of the image on the black fondant and cut freehand.

Once the first layer had a chance to dry, I rolled out the black layer and used a scriber needle to tweak the design for straight lines.
